Frieren Season 2 Drops with Only 10 Episodes

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End returns to Crunchyroll for its second season, offering fans a shorter run of 10 episodes compared to the first season’s 28-episode lineup.

At a Glance

  • Season 2 streams every Friday on Crunchyroll starting from chapter 61 of the manga
  • The condensed episode count mirrors ongoing manga hiatuses tied to the authors’ health
  • Madhouse’s adaptation keeps its lo-fi, meditative tone while delivering high-impact action

The new season picks up with the elf mage Frieren guiding two young heroes-Stark, a warrior, and Fern, a fledgling mage-on a retraced route from her original world-saving quest. This time she vows to savor the small moments she once overlooked, driven by regret after watching her former party members age and die while she remained functionally immortal.

Her goal remains unchanged: reach Aureole, the rumored resting place of souls, to speak again with Himmel, the hero who loved her. Along the way the trio accepts side quests-slaying demons, entering mage tournaments, and hunting treasure chests that might actually be mimics.

Studio Madhouse continues to balance quiet reflection with explosive set pieces. Fight scenes animate fabric ruffles and dragon rides with kinetic detail, surpassing the manga’s tendency to downplay battles. Behind the scenes, staff keep the show in the zeitgeist through daily social-media posts of Frieren plushies in real-world settings and an ending sequence for season two, “The Story of Us” by Milet, animated with hand-drawn colored-pencil sketches by artist Mimei Aoume.

Fan engagement has spilled into real life. In 2024 a Frieren viewer stopped a knife attack, later saying, “If Himmel was there, he would’ve done the same thing.” The series has also sparked an artist boom on Twitter after a Reddit user asked for tips on drawing Frieren from a low angle.

The shortened season reflects source-material challenges. Manga creators Kanehito Yamada and Tsukasa Abe have taken multiple hiatuses for health reasons, limiting available chapters. Season two is expected to cover material through roughly chapter 71-77, giving anime-only viewers a compact but complete arc.

Episodes arrive weekly on Crunchyroll.
