- Why it matters: After software delays and tariff headaches, Volvo is betting the EX60 can re-energize its EV push in a cooling U.S. market
Volvo is pressing ahead with an all-new electric SUV-the EX60-promising up to 400 miles of range and a ground-up platform designed to slash weight and boost efficiency. The reveal comes as broader EV demand softens and rival automakers hesitate to launch fresh battery-powered models.
Powertrain and Range
Three variants will be offered:
- Single-motor, high-efficiency: estimated 400 miles per charge
- Two-wheel drive: 310 miles
- All-wheel drive: 320 miles
EPA figures are still pending. Volvo notes the longest-range EX60 outruns the BMW iX3, Cadillac Optiq and Mercedes-Benz GLC EV on paper.
HugInCore Architecture
Under the skin sits HugInCore, Volvo’s in-house term for a new electrical backbone that combines:
- Next-gen electric motors
- Upgraded battery cells
- Mega-cast body sections
The automaker says the one-piece casting approach trims mass and lifts both performance and efficiency.
Charging and Software
Every EX60 ships with a native Tesla-style North American Charging Standard (NACS) inlet-no adapter required-unlocking direct Supercharger access. On the software front, Volvo will debut an embedded version of Google’s Gemini AI assistant, replacing the outgoing Google Assistant. Apple Music, Dolby Atmos and an optional 28-speaker Bowers & Wilkins array will also be available.
Compute hardware taps Nvidia and Qualcomm silicon to power infotainment and advanced driver-assistance features. Volvo pledges “no-lag” response times, a direct counter to early EX30 and EX90 models that drew criticism for sluggish, bug-prone interfaces. Consumer Reports previously flagged frozen audio and climate menus and noted cars could be practically undrivable during over-the-air updates.
Safety Heritage and Seatbelts
Even the seatbelts are new: a nod to Volvo’s 1959 introduction of the modern three-point design. Details of the updated restraint system were not disclosed, but the automaker underlined its ongoing safety focus.
Trim and Timeline

Deliveries to dealers begin summer 2025 with all variants on sale by end of 2026. An EX60 Cross Country off-road variant-featuring extra ground clearance and rugged styling cues-will follow the standard model.
Market Position
Although Volvo still expects gasoline and plug-in hybrid models to deliver the bulk of volume-and will start U.S. production of those powertrains late this year-the EX60 is intended to anchor the brand’s premium electric SUV play for the next several years. After grappling with software setbacks, tariffs on Chinese production and the loss of federal incentives, Volvo is positioning the EX60 as a fresh start in the competitive luxury EV segment.
