In a shocking incident at Macy’s in Herald Square, a Los Angeles County deputy’s girlfriend was stabbed multiple times while changing their 9-month-old daughter’s diaper.
The Incident
The couple had stopped at the Macy’s in Herald Square early Thursday afternoon. The 38-year-old girlfriend was in the restroom changing their daughter’s diaper when a homeless woman from Massachusetts attacked her. The deputy heard her screams and noted that the baby fell from the changing table during the assault.
The Attacker

Police identified the assailant as Kerri Aherne, 43, who was arrested and charged with attempted murder, assault and criminal possession of a weapon. Authorities say Aherne is a homeless woman from Massachusetts who randomly assaulted the girlfriend.
The Response
Two women stepped in immediately. One picked up the baby while the other tended to the girlfriend’s injuries. The deputy, who did not share his name, said, “Everyone ran outside, and others started recording instead of helping.” He added, “I just want to thank those two girls because we didn’t get a chance to thank them.”
The couple held Aherne down until security and police arrived. Both the child and the woman were transported to a nearby hospital. The girlfriend received multiple stitches for six gashes and is expected to recover.
Aftermath
The deputy said the incident would not deter the family from future visits to New York. He stated, “This could have happened to anyone anywhere, this could’ve happened in LA. We’re just happy to be alive.”
A spokesperson for Macy’s told WPIX, “We are deeply saddened about the incident that took place [Thursday] as the safety of our customers and colleagues is our top priority.”
