In a decisive move that will shape the future of education in Austin, the Eanes Independent School District Board of Trustees unanimously elected Kirk Koennecke as its next superintendent, with the appointment slated for January 1, 2026.
A New Leader Emerges
The board’s unanimous vote in November marked the culmination of a rigorous search process that narrowed the field to a single finalist. Koennecke will take over from interim superintendent Dr. Tom Trigg, who has led the district since Dr. Jeff Arnett retired in July. The transition is scheduled for the start of the 2026 school year.
Koennecke’s appointment follows a decade of superintendent experience, most recently in Ohio’s Indian Hill Exempted Village School District. His career in public education spans more than 30 years, during which he earned recognition as National Superintendent of the Year in 2023 from the National Association of School Superintendents.
Koennecke’s Credentials and Vision
The new superintendent brings a robust educational background: an education specialist degree from Wright State University; a Master of Arts in Education Administration from John Carroll University; a Master of Science in Sports Administration from Miami University (Ohio); and a Bachelor of Science in Education from The Ohio State University.
When asked what drew him to the role, Koennecke said, “This is really a destination job, it is a one-of-a-kind opportunity and my wife and I, we have studied this district and this community and just couldn’t pass it up.”
He also reflected on the district’s legacy: “There is a legacy of leadership in public education at Eanes and when you put great families and children together with world-class teachers, amazing things happen,” Koennecke remarked.
Koennecke outlined his primary focus: “First and foremost my job as the leader at Eanes is to be the unabashed cheerleader and advocate for the board of education and the schools and the children and families of Eanes,” he explained. “I want to create and environment where children come running through the doors to learn from world-class staff, and Eanes has done that and we have to protect and sustain that.”

He emphasized the district’s role as a destination for families: “I think everybody is looking at public education as competition at a high level and how do you provide the best services for a child and family,” he said. “What we want to do, is always in public education, is provide a spectrum of high-quality services so that people look at our school community as a destination where they know their family can thrive.”
Challenges Ahead
Funding remains a top concern. Koennecke acknowledged the growing pressures from competition and budget constraints: “You are always going to have to make strategic decisions about those things to rank order your priorities and how you are going to spend your money for the community, you want to be great stewards of tax dollars and of course everybody wants to take care of their community the best they can. When we have to make tough decisions we have to do it together, we have to do it as a team and we have to do it with representatives also.”
He stressed the importance of collaboration: “When we have to make tough decisions we have to do it together, we have to do it as a team and we have to do it with representatives also.”
Despite these challenges, Koennecke expressed confidence that the district’s strong reputation would amplify its voice at the state level. “Eanes is a model public school district in the state of Texas so I hope when we do talk and we do advocate, that people listen,” he said.
Community and State Impact
The new superintendent’s leadership is expected to reinforce Eanes ISD’s standing as a benchmark for educational excellence in Texas. His experience in Ohio and his national recognition position him to navigate the complexities of a rapidly evolving public-school landscape while maintaining the district’s high standards.
The board’s unanimous decision underscores the community’s confidence in Koennecke’s ability to sustain and enhance the district’s legacy. As the district prepares for the transition, stakeholders anticipate a focus on strategic budgeting, community partnership, and continued advocacy for families and educators.
