Jimmy Lai’s Daughter Urges Release, Says Father Wants to Focus on Family and Faith

In a move that has drawn the attention of Washington, London, and Beijing, Jimmy Lai’s daughter, Claire Lai, has publicly stated that her 78‑year‑old father would devote his time to God and family rather than political activism if he were freed.

Lai’s Conviction and Family Appeal

Jimmy Lai was convicted in a national security case that followed his outspoken support for democratic reforms in Hong Kong. The verdict, reached after five years of custody—much of it in solitary confinement—means he could spend the rest of his life behind bars. Claire Lai, speaking to The Associated Press in Washington, said:

> “He just wants to reunite with his family. He wants to dedicate his life to serving our Lord, and he wants to dedicate the rest of his days to his family,” she told the AP. “My father is fundamentally not a man who operates on illegal ground.”

She added that in prison he has drawn pictures of the crucifixion and of the Blessed Mother, and that he wishes to continue this work if released.

Political Backing and International Pressure

The case has attracted attention from U.S. and U.K. officials. On social media, Secretary of State Marco Rubio echoed President Trump’s call for Beijing to release Lai:

> “I echo President Trump’s call for Beijing to conclude this ordeal and release Mr. Lai.”

Rubio also said:

> “The guilty verdict in Mr. Lai’s national security case reflects the enforcement of Beijing’s laws to silence those who seek to protect freedom of speech and other fundamental rights.”

In London, Claire’s brother Sebastien Lai is lobbying the British government, saying:

> “Regarding the United Kingdom, we talk about normalizing relationships. Well, my father’s freedom should be a precondition to that.”

He added:

> “I think you’ve got to keep fighting no matter what. I think, taking my father’s example, standing up for what is right is why we’re doing it. This is my way of fighting for it.”

Tom Wells, spokesman for Prime Minister Keir Starmer, said the case is a priority for the government and that they will continue to call for Lai’s immediate release.

Health Concerns and Legal Context

Claire Lai has highlighted the toll of five years in solitary confinement on her father’s health. She said he has lost a significant amount of weight, is weaker, and has suffered back and waist pains. She noted:

> “His nails when we visit we can tell that they’re turning colors and falling off. Some of his teeth are rotting.”

She also mentioned heart palpitations, diabetes, and failing vision and hearing. Hong Kong’s security chief, Chris Tang, rebuked these concerns, stating Lai has received “full medical services” and has never complained about the care he has received. Tang added that Lai had asked to be jailed by himself and that request was granted for his personal safety and well‑being.

Calls for Release from Global Leaders

President Trump, in the Oval Office, said:

> “I feel so badly. I spoke to President Xi (Jinping) about it, and I asked to consider his release.” Jimmy Lai is “not well, he’s an older man, and he’s not well, so I did put that request out. We’ll see what happens.”

A bipartisan group of more than 30 U.S. senators had urged Trump to help secure Lai’s release before he met Xi in South Korea in October.

Tom Kellogg, executive director of the Center for Asian Law at Georgetown University, argued that medical parole makes sense given Lai’s health:

> “Now that we have a verdict, Trump needs to put pressure on the Chinese government to release Jimmy as soon as possible.”
