In a recent appearance on NewsNation’s “On Balance,” retired U.S. Marine Corps Lt. Gen. James B. Laster spoke about Toys for Tots’ plans for this Christmas season.
Facing a Shortfall
Toys for Tots has experienced a decline in toy donations this year. “We are seeing less toy collections, but we are making up for that with what we call supplemental packages,” Laster explained. The foundation’s supplemental packages are toys that the organization purchases directly and then sends to local coordinating agencies. This approach compensates for fewer donated items while still meeting the growing demand from families who want to give children gifts for the holidays.
Reaching Millions
The organization aims to serve a number of children comparable to last year’s record. Laster said the foundation hopes to come close to the 12.9 million children who received donations in 2024. “I don’t know if we will do that many this year, but we are going to give it our best shot,” he added. The goal reflects Toys for Tots’ longstanding mission to deliver toys to children in need during the holiday season.
A Legacy of Service
Toys for Tots began in 1947 when a group of Marines from a reserve unit in Los Angeles organized a toy collection for children who had lost fathers in World War II. “It’s important to show, yes, we can be feared on the battlefield, but we’re also ready to accomplish the mission here at home and take care of our own people, especially children,” Laster said. Since that first effort, the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve has kept the tradition alive. Over the years, the foundation has donated an estimated 708 million gifts to 314 million kids in need.
How You Can Help
Laster encouraged supporters that it is still possible to contribute. Donors can drop an unwrapped toy at a collection point, volunteer time, or make a monetary donation to help fund supplemental packages. The foundation’s outreach continues to rely on community generosity to keep the holiday spirit alive for children across the country.
