Austin, the capital of Texas, is a city that is often overlooked despite its many offerings. If you’re looking for an escape from the sweltering Texas heat, you can’t go wrong with a dip in one of Austin’s local swimming holes. Here, we’ll highlight five of the best swimming holes in and around the city that are definitely worth a visit.
Sculpture and Twin Falls
Located just south of Hwy 360 off of a Mopac access road, Sculpture and Twin Falls are a hidden gem that’s a little less touristy than places like Barton Springs. While the falls themselves are typically crowded, there are other areas along the trails that are more secluded.
The key to finding these spots is to check if there’s water flowing. You can do this by viewing a flow gauge. Even low numbers like 10-20 cfs (cubic feet per second) are enough to fill the pools.
The Flats on Barton Creek Greenbelt
Another great spot along Barton Creek is The Flats, which can be accessed by taking Barton Skyway from Mopac East. The main lounging area is just a short walk away, making it more accessible than Sculpture and Twin Falls.
However, this also means it tends to be busier and has a more eccentric vibe. Expect to see coolers, dogs running around, and even impromptu drum circles. For more information about Barton Creek Greenbelt, click here.
McKinney Falls State Park
McKinney Falls State Park is located in the southeast corner of Austin and is less well-known than the previous options. There’s an entrance fee to get in, but it’s worth it to swim in one of the two water holes and explore the unique rock formations. There are also campgrounds in the area.
Barton Springs Pool
One of the more well-known options on this list, Barton Springs Pool is a three-acre pool fed by underground springs. The water is a refreshing 60 degrees Fahrenheit year-round and is perfect after a walk on the Lady Bird Lake Hike and Bike Trail.
Bring a picnic and make a day of it for less than the cost of a meal. For more information about Barton Springs Pool, check out our full write-up here.
Hamilton Pool
Just outside of Austin lies Hamilton Pool, a breathtaking swimming hole that was formed by a collapsed grotto. With a waterfall and unique rock formations, it’s a must-see attraction for anyone visiting Austin.
There is a flat entrance fee per car, and reservations are required during the summer months. Learn more about Hamilton Pool here.
Bonus Attraction: Congress Bridge Bats
The single biggest attraction in Austin is the Congress Bridge Bats’ nightly departure. Every night from March through October, around 1.5 million bats emerge from beneath the bridge. You can watch them from the bridge or nearby, but for a cooler and more unique experience, consider viewing them from a kayak or boat.
