London welcomed fans of Jane Austen as the city marked the 250th anniversary of the author’s birth with a series of events that spanned from a church service in her birthplace to a virtual gathering that drew participants from across the globe.
Jane Austen’s House in Chawton
On Tuesday, Jane Austen’s House in the southern English village of Chawton hosted talks, tours, and performances for dozens of visitors. The cottage, now a museum with Austen artifacts, was where the author lived for the last years of her life and where she wrote all six of her novels.
Global Zoom Party
A virtual party followed the in-person celebrations, inviting fans from around the world. “Regency dress strongly encouraged,” organizers said, adding that more than 500 people from countries as far-flung as Chile, Kazakhstan and Belarus had signed up for the Zoom party.
The Cottage Museum
The museum displays personal items and manuscripts that illuminate Austen’s creative process. Visitors were able to walk through the rooms where she penned her most beloved works.

Fans, who call themselves “Janeites,” have marked the anniversary year with Regency balls and festivals staged in the U.K., U.S. and beyond. The events echo the period’s style and bring together enthusiasts from many countries.
Bath’s Yuletide Ball
Over the weekend, the city of Bath, where Austen lived for five years, hosted the Yuletide Jane Austen Birthday Ball. The ball served as the finale of many grand costumed events held there this year.
A Year of Celebration
Thousands of enthusiasts worldwide have already taken part in a yearlong celebration of one of English literature’s greats. The festivities have combined local heritage sites, international fan gatherings, and online participation.
