A surgical resident at the University of Toledo Medical Center has been arrested after court documents reveal he allegedly forced abortion medication on a woman he impregnated.
Background of the Relationship
Court records from Lucas County show that Dr. Hassan Abbas, a surgical resident, had an extramarital relationship with a woman who became pregnant in December 2024. Abbas reportedly asked the woman to terminate the pregnancy and stated he would not allow it to continue. The woman, who said she did not know Abbas was married, ended the relationship but later that month the two reconciled and began planning for a family.
The Dec. 18 Incident
On Dec. 18, at Abbas’s home in Holland, he received a call from his father, Jihad Abbas, a named defendant in a civil suit filed by the victim. The call was contentious, and court records say Abbas became agitated and nervous. Abbas’s cultural and religious background, which prohibits having a child out of wedlock, made the pregnancy a point of contention, according to an amended complaint filed with the Lucas County Court of Common Pleas.
Alleged Forced Medication
That evening the victim says she woke up with Abbas on top of her attempting to force medication down her throat. She says she ingested the medication out of fear of suffocation and Abbas allegedly told the woman that his father, Jihad, would never allow the woman’s pregnancy.
“You have to understand…. My father will cut me off, take my vehicles, make me move…. Please understand,” Abbas reportedly said, per court documents.
The victim says Abbas took her keys and phone to prevent her from calling 911, so she instead attempted to rinse her mouth out. Police said there was white powder residue on the woman’s face, her sleeves, and on the bed. She then fled the residence and attempted to induce vomiting.
Hospital Findings
After arriving at the hospital, it was confirmed that the victim had ingested the “plan C” pill made of Mifepristone and Misoprostol, which was illegally obtained by Abbas, police said. The victim began hemorrhaging about an hour later and she suffered a miscarriage.
The victim also told police that every time the two were together in December, Abbas would offer her tea or hot chocolate, a plan confirmed in court documents that was devised by Hassan and Jihad in which Hassan would spike the woman’s drinks with the “plan C” pill to induce a miscarriage.
Legal Proceedings
Hassan Abbas was indicted on Dec. 4. On Friday a Lucas County judge issued him a $75,000 bond and ordered him to surrender his passport. A pretrial hearing is scheduled for Jan. 30.
Medical Board Response

According to multiple sources, The State Medical Board of Ohio suspended Abbas’s medical license and he was placed on administrative leave at the hospital on Nov. 5.
