The U.S. team for the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics was announced Friday, with most players coming from the NHL-run 4 Nations tournament where the Americans reached the final before losing to Canada in overtime. The roster is anchored by three standout performers from that event: Tage Thompson, Clayton Keller, and Seth Jones. General Manager Bill Guerin praised the chemistry that “allowed the guys to play the way that they did.”
Roster Selection
The only players left off the 4 Nations group are forward Chris Kreider and defenseman Adam Fox, the 2021 Norris Trophy winner. Guerin addressed concerns that Fox was omitted because of his role in Connor McDavid’s OT goal 11 months ago, stating:
> “If you think we made a decision on one play, then you must not think we’re very smart. I’m going to keep those conversations private. Our decision was made, and we’re moving forward.”
Player Highlights
Tage Thompson (Buffalo Sabres) is a point-a-game producer and is noted for his size and versatility. Clayton Keller (Utah Mammoth) tied for the team’s scoring lead and wore the “C” at Worlds. Seth Jones was a key figure in the Florida Panthers’ second consecutive Stanley Cup run and was chosen for his shutdown prowess.
- Tage Thompson – 6-ft-6, strong skater, excellent shot, plays center or wing, penalty killer, power-play contributor.
- Clayton Keller – leading scorer for Utah, versatile forward, represented U.S. at Worlds.
- Seth Jones – powerful defenseman, plays on both sides of the puck.
Goaltending and Game Plans
The U.S. kept the same three goaltenders used in the 4 Nations: reigning league MVP Connor Hellebuyck, Jake Oettinger, and Jeremy Swayman. Jason Robertson, Cole Caufield, and Alex DeBrincat were left off, with Guerin noting that size is a bonus but not a requirement.
| Goalie | Role | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Connor Hellebuyck | Starter | League MVP |

The team will begin play on Feb. 12 against Latvia, with a roster of 25 players and 20 skaters dressed for each game.
